We all love the STORY, right? We all have one, some smoother than others, but nonetheless. As baseball winds down, it’s time to get into the stories behind the game. As a documentary junkie, I can't get enough of a good look behind the scenes, stories about those who changed the game, and all the struggles and adversities players went through to get to the top. There’s so much to watch (or listen to) this offseason, but here are a few personal favorites worth adding to your watchlist.
The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox
Where to Watch: Netflix
This documentary series gets up close and personal with the 2024 Boston Red Sox during their roller coaster season. If you enjoy seeing what happens beyond the field, this one offers a look at the people, pressure, and personalities behind a major league club. it's really raw and offers a rare perspective from players, managers and partners.
It Ain't Over: Yogi Berra
Where to Watch: Apple TV
Yogi Berra was one of baseball's most recognizable figures, but there's much more to his story than his famous quotes. His granddaughter, Lindsay Berra, helps tell that story alongside his sons, former Yankees teammates, players he managed, writers, broadcasters, and admirers. He was too often the punchline, but he was also one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived.
Long Shot
Where to Watch: Netflix
The odds of Juan Catalan proving his innocence in a murder case seemed impossibly slim. His defense hinged on the raw footage from a TV show that was filming at a MLB game. It's an unbelievable true story that shows just how unexpected evidence can change everything.
Untold: Johnny Football
Where to Watch: Netflix
Johnny Manziel helped expose the gap between the money college football generates and the money its players were allowed to make. His story became part of the larger conversation that eventually led to NIL.
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Where to Listen: Spotify
Think you know this song? You probably do. But the story behind "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is worth a listen. It's one of the most recognizable songs in America, right alongside "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Happy Birthday."
The Sandlot
Where to Watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Disney+
Few baseball movies capture the magic of growing up and playing ball like The Sandlot. It's a nostalgic reminder of neighborhood games, lifelong friendships, and why so many of us fell in love with baseball in the first place. I know you've seen it, but watch it again.
These are just a few personal favorites.
